A Decision Must be Made
Sometimes we live situations in which we must
make a firm and safe decision, which could drastically alter our life or daily
life. In experiences like this is essential to be clear of what it is truly
right and favorable for our own good. Many factors can influence the decision
to be made, some of them may be feelings, the opinions of other people or money
and the lack of time to analyze and decide. But independently of the
circumstances a decision must be made. In my life I had several moments of
which required a lot of concentration to make a decision. In this essay I will
talk about the last situation I lived in which a life changing decision had to
be made, which was my admission to the university.
Recently, as the beginning of August 2017,
I had to make a very important decision in my life. It was the beginning of the
academic year in Puerto Rico’s public schools, also, my last year as a high
school student had just begun. Upon entering my first class, the first day of
school, my homeroom teacher tells me "What are you doing here? you must be
in college ... "
I initially took it as a compliment to my intelligence or academic record and started to laugh. The teacher repeated the above with a very serious tone and directed me to the office of the school counselor, who was in charge of the possible cases of early admission to the university. As soon as the school counselor looked at me and listened to my question about the possible opportunity the teacher told me, he was surprised and quickly began to do the paperwork. This first day of school was very irregular one for me, since the announcement of the great news, I didn’t partake in any class during the day while I consulted close family members. Due to the delay of the news my admission to the university was limited to only the universities that had not started the classes.
That day I spent the whole day trying to assimilate the news and thought about the great change that could suffer my life. All my expectations about that new semester, that last year as a high school senior, were totally altered with this news. I did not know what to do, the night after the announcement I still felt indecisive about this “once in a lifetime choice” I had to make, and I started crying, nervousness and uneasiness took over. It was a very worrisome circumstance because I still did not know what to study, or which university I wanted to attend, let alone imagined that it would be so soon, since I thought I had a year to decide. Time kept running, but a decision had to be made before the universities started their school years and, also the admission takes time and a lot of paperwork. I began to analyze if my parents had the budget and the economic capacity at that moment to pay for college and I heard opinions from my loved ones. When listening to the motivation of everyone and even more of my parents, I took courage and decided to take on the challenge. Clearly, the most economic and prestigious option was the University of Puerto Rico. Since I did not know what to study, I took my father's advice and entered the highest department that my “IGS” would allow, which was the Department of Biology. In less than a week I had already been admitted to the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus (http://www.uprrp.edu/), in which I was accepted with only 16 years of age.
It was a crossroads for me since it was something unexpected and very surprising. The whole family learned about my situation and they supported me a lot in this amazing moment of my life. I think it was a great option and opportunity for my life as a student and human being. I hope you have made the right decision and that everything goes well at the end of the road. One of the things that motivated me to do it was the great bet that many relatives and teacher made for me, I hope not to fail them. I am aware that there are many cases like mine, but even so it remains a great blessing for anyone who has the opportunity. I'm doing quite well now, I've had some problems but that’s all part of it and only while I get the hang of it. We must always bring the best of ourselves and don’t dread changes.

I admire the courage it took you to let go of your last year of high school to suddenly embark into the college experience. I'm glad we got to be group partners and it was really great seeing how hard working you are and extremely responsible with the assignments and oral presentations!
ReplyDeleteGreat story! Proud of your accomplishment. Decisions need to be made at their correct moment, you took advantage of a great opportunity.
